how i got here

my journey

I've been a vegetarian for 26 years.  Up until 6 years ago, I still ate cheese and eggs.  The left hand picture above is what I looked like before I removed cheese and eggs from my plate and adopted a low-fat, entirely plant-based lifestyle.  Since then, I've lost over 50 pounds and have kept it off.  I also resolved an autoimmune condition called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura or ITP.  My body was attacking and destroying my platelets.  I could have faced the removal of my spleen or platelet transfusions.  A low-fat, plant-based lifestyle made a dramatic difference in my life.  Now I am able to maintain an ideal weight with minimal effort.  My cholesterol dropped from 197 to 132 without medication.  The osteoarthritis in my knee, for which I've had 5 surgeries, has resolved.  I am giving myself the best possible chance for a healthy and active life into my golden years.  I am maximizing the odds that I will be around for a long time for my husband and two children.  It was such a dramatic change in my quality of life that I decided to make a career of helping people to make the same choices and to improve their ability to enjoy their lives.

So despite having an undergraduate and graduate degree in finance and thirteen years of experience in the corporate finance world, I chose to switch careers in order to share what I've learned about how food choices can affect your health and likelihood of disease.  I completed the only collegiate program in the country focused on the medical benefits of a low-fat, plant-based lifestyle from Cornell University.  The curriculum is grounded in the most comprehensive studies of nutrition conducted to-date.  I also became certified by John McDougall, MD to teach his low-fat, plant-based program, The Starch Solution, and became a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, so that I could help interested people to change their lives.

I also founded Lifestyle WoRx with Cynthia West, MD.  Lifestyle WoRx helps participants to reclaim their health by showing them how to incorporate healthy eating, increased activity, and stress management habits into their busy lives.  This program accepts the following insurance plans: Highmark, UPMC, Coventry/HealthAmerica/Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Medicare.
